Summerville Crash Notes
In her book, The Family Book of Fact and Fiction, the late Edith Mosher
gave first hand account of the crash on June 25, 1943, near
Summerville, Hants Co. of a Ventura Bomber. out of Pennfield Ridge, New
Brunswick.
The whole crew was lost, two from New Zealand, one from Australia and
one from Ontario.
The crash occurred near the Musgrove Road, a side road that connected
the villages of Summerville and Riverside.

The aircraft (Ventura Mk.II AE186) took off from Pennfield Ridge, NB at 1237 hours G.M.T. on 25th June, 1943 for the purpose of carrying out a low flying cross-country navigation exercise. It crashed near Summerville, NS @ 1350 hours killing all four members of the crew. The crew members were: 1) P/O G.W. Cowie (NZ422262) (Pilot); 2) P/O C.A. Griffiths (NZ421703) (Navigator); 3) P/O J.C. Loucks (J/26843) (Air Gunner) and 4) Sgt. C.A. Mulcahy (AUS422234) (Wireless Air Gunner).
Cowie and Griffiths were buried at Maplewood Cemetery and Mulcahy was buried at St. John’s The Evangelist Cemetery, both of these cemeteries are in Windsor, NS. Locks was returned home for burial in his native province of Ontario. He was buried at St. Thomas Anglican Cemetery in Bracebridge, ON.
