I am trying to gather information about inscriptions
and petroglyphs in Nova Scotia that have some mystery or controversy
about them, or are otherwise intriguing. Here is the list that I am
working with so far ...
- Yarmouth
Fletcher (Runic) Stone, now in the museum, very famous.
- Yarmouth Bayview stone, similar characters as (1), with a few extra.
Whereabouts unknown (put in a wall)?
- Plymouth stone
(near Yarmouth), found in a wall; John Coleman has
spoken with the man who has it (same stone, or different ones?)
- Lent's Island
stone inscription (two stones or one?)
- Green
Island (Cape Sable Island) stone. Runic-style characters.
- Two
or three
Seal Island Stones, inscriptions quite crude (could
be natural marks). At least one of the stones may now be buried.
- McNutts Island
Inscription, in bedrock near lighthouse. We have
been told to check with Stephen Davis, SMU, as he may know the person
who carved it.
- Initials and Mi'kmaq petroglyphs on Boundary
Rock (apex of 4 counties).
- Inscribed
cryptic stone from Oak Island, displayed in Halifax,
whereabouts now not generally known?
- "H+O"
Engraved rock found at Joudrey's Cove, Oak Island, by
Gilbert Hedden in 1936.
- "G" stone found by Dan Blankenship on Oak Island.
- Inscriptions apparently found by George Young (of Queensland) on
the shore of Mahone Bay.
- The Deep
Cove Epitaph.
- Goat
Island 1606 stone, collected by T.C. Haliburton, wherabouts
now not generally known.
- LEBEL
stone from Port Royal, now in Fort Anne museum (not displayed).
- Joseph d'Aulnay stone (1653) -- brother of Charles d'Aulnay, on
display at Fort Anne museum.
- Carved
arrowheads in boulders or bedrock near Goat Island? (Two
locations or one? Natural or manmade?)
- Mount
Hanley Stone, still in yard of private home? Thought by
some to be ogam inscription, dismissed as natural marks by others.
- Inscription
Rock, Black Hole Brook. Many English/French initials,
some symbols, possibly some Mi'kmaq petroglyphs.
- Two inscribed (petroglyph-style) stones on the footpath
to Cape Split.
- McGowan Lake
Mi'kmaq Petroglyphs, underwater now.
- Fairy
Lake Mi'kmaq Petroglyphs, partly underwater. Protected in
Kejimkujik National Park.
- Miller Mountain Petroglyphs, Dartmouth.
- Bedford Barrens
Mi'kmaq Petroglyphs. Several petroglyphs and
carved English/French initials and names along one long ridge.
- Summer
Cove petroglyphs, Bedford Basin. A great many English/French names
and initials in the immediate area, but one special set of Egyptian-style
hieroglyphic symbols that are outstanding.
- Lily
Lake petroglyph. A heraldic-style shield/ensign pattern in
the lichen crust of a stone.
- Oswald
Eastwood inscription at the gateway of his ruined
cranberry bog. Very near site (24).
- Goose Island inscription documented by Dr. Helen Creighton and
her rubbings of the markings are in the National Museum of Canada
somewhere. Near Jeddore, Halifax Co. There is a story of treasure
and
burial associated with the inscription on this lonely seaswept rock.
See the story in Bluenose Ghosts.
- Captain Kidd Boot inscription Stone.
- Sparkling Rocks, grottos near Goldenville where many names are
inscribed.
- Inscription on iron axe head
found on shore of Tor Bay.
If there are any other ones that should be in this
list, please tell me.
