Roxbury Families
- The spellings DURLAND & DURLING are commonly interchanged in the historical record. - Daniel Durland/Durling doesn't appear in "Planters and Pioneers" because he was a "United Empire Loyalist" who came to Wilmot from New York in 1783. [P.& P.'s preceeded the arrival of Loyalists. He proudly declared himself as a Loyalist in both N.Y. & N.S.] - Daniel's children were born ca. 1760 - 1780 (+/-) [He had 7 sons including Zebulon, Daniel(Jr.) & Thomas.] - Daniel's sons Thomas and Charles founded "Durland's Settlement" (later "Roxbury") supposedly in the 1820's, approx. 4mi. due south into the South Mountain from Paradise, near Lawrencetown, Anna. Co., N.S. [The Durland's were preceeded by Acadians ca.1755. I visited the spot in the woods that is Roxbury last August. Where once there were open fields, there is now a dense spruce forest. Rock wall fencing, building foundations & wells are all that remain. There are two small cemeteries.
