Hemlock Ravine – Old North Road

The Old North Road is the site of a known riding road dating from at least the time of Edward and Julie (1790s). Parts or most of it may even be the original construction. As such it is an important historical artifact, and should be preserved. At the same time it is now crossed by many tree roots (hemlock and yellow birch being the most frequent and conspicuous). Restoration of the road would unavoidably damage many trees. There is also no clear standard to which to restore it. There is also no point in burying it where it can neither been seen nor studied.

The Old North Road will be left as it is. Efforts will be made to avoid losing any more rocks from the constructed road bed (effectively, rocks which are noted to have been displaced will be replaced). Research on the age of the road will be encouraged. This includes archival research and possible on site consideration of construction techniques.
