June 24 1988 N.S. Museum report of ” a stone feature “on summit of Smelt Hill Porters Lake UTM 744442 NTS11 D/11.
Property of Mr. Farrell at that time. “Top of the hill is quite heavily wooded, but, if cleared, would provide a view of the coast from Sambro to Jeddore. There is indeed an apparently circular low stone feature, formed of fieldstones at the very summit, about 10 m in diameter and 1 meter high. However it is poorly defined on the north side, and an apparent central depression gives it almost a doughnut -like appearance. No artifacts were noticed in the vicinity. Much of this area was formerly cleared, and clearance piles of fieldstones are visible on the side of the hill. On the other hand, the highest point seems an unlikely location for a clearance pile and this feature does not closely resemble the obvious clearance piles.”
(UTM 744442 or 0474400E 4944200N is marked where it would fall in NAD 27)
January 19, 2003 “We did a quick check of the Smelt Hill Stone Circle site on Sunday. Although we didn’t find it, due to the deep snow cover, we were able to see that although parts of the area around the supposed location of the site have been clearcut over the past few years, there has not been any development near the northern crest of Smelt Hill. So chances are the circle is intact and we should be able to find it when the snow is gone.”

Visited the area of the NS Musem coordinates, traveling up from the volunteer fire department via an overgrown road to the former clear cuts at the hill top. No sign of a stone circle although its difficult to see in the areas that appear to be re-seeded with spruce. We may have found some kind of well at the height of land, an odd depression in the bushes that could bear further examination. Exited down the hill by a much easier road gated with a cable where it meets the paved road.
